Former Beaufort police officer sues city, current and former chiefs over 2023 firing

A former Beaufort Police Department officer who was fired in 2023 has filed a lawsuit against the City of Beaufort and its current and former police chiefs, alleging she was retaliated against, improperly terminated and subjected to investigations that ultimately resulted in no finding of criminal wrongdoing or misconduct against her.

Recently, Beaufort County Treasurer Maria Walls, herself an elected official, stood up at the May 26 County Council meeting and reminded the elected officials there had been eight county administrators, six chief financial officers, five deputy administrators and four county attorneys in the past nine years. Shouldn’t that have been a red flag something is wrong?
