This Week In History: Lincoln authorizes Beaufort National Cemetery

In a letter bearing the date Feb. 10, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln authorizes that part of a 64-acre tract known as Polly’s Grove Plantation be used for Beaufort National Cemetery. The land had been acquired by U.S. Army Gen. David Hunter for $75 at an 1863 tax sale of properties confiscated by the federal government. After the Civil War, 29 acres of the parcel was retained for the cemetery.

BCSO deputy suspended without pay after pointing gun at unarmed teenagers

On Monday, Sept, 29, many in Beaufort, S.C. woke to a now-viral video being shared across social media that, for many in the comments, caused shock and anger.

The video showed a man, who we now know is an off-duty deputy with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO), approaching several young teenage boys while pointing his gun at them and screaming for them to get on the ground.

Ridgeland rejects Tickton Hall annexation

It is Thursday, Sept. 18, and I’m sitting in a wood-paneled room in Ridgeland, S.C. It is 8 p.m., and most of the 35 other people in this small, jammed-packed room are jubilant; happy because the Ridgeland Town Council has just voted, 4-1, to reject the proposed annexation, proposed rezoning and proposed development agreement presented by Tickton Hall Investments, LLC; Euhaw Holdings, LLC; Tickton Hall Holdings LLC; and Pepper Hall LLC.
