Burton fire battles 2 threatening outdoor fires

Staff reports

The Burton Fire District responded to two outdoor fires in less than 24 hours that threatened property, one of which caused damages.

Sunday, May 17, just before 2:30 p.m., the Burton Fire District, assisted by the Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department, responded to a boat fire on Castle Rock Road that was spreading and endangering nearby structures. Fire crews arrived on scene and found a boat ablaze with flames spreading toward a shed and mobile home.

Firefighters quickly contained the fire before it ignited the structures; however, both sustained heat damages. The mobile home was vacant.

No injuries were reported. The fire is believed to have been caused by trash burning in a nearby barrel.

Just after 4 p.m., Sunday, Burton firefighters responded to a reported brush fire on Angel Lane. Fire crews arrived to an approximately half-acre fire in a wooded area behind some residences which had spread to within 50 feet of a home.

Firefighters contained the fire from spreading and were on scene for an hour soaking the area down.

Just before 7 a.m., Monday, firefighters were called back to Angel Lane when some areas began to smolder again. Firefighters remained on scene for two hours soaking the area down; however, due to the thick underbrush, firefighters will continue to monitor the area.

No injuries were reported. The fire is believed to have been caused by a discarded cigarette along a walking path through the wooded area.
