Veteran of the Week – Calvin Coleman

American Legion Beaufort Post 207 brings you Calvin Coleman, 68, who joined the United States Marines here in Beaufort in 1975. After Boot Camp at Parris Island and training as a Quartermaster in Aberdeen, Md., he was assigned to MCAS Cheery Point in the Supply Unit. While there he made a deployment to Europe. He next served on Okinawa, deploying to Korea and medevacked to the Naval Hospital in the Philippines for treatment. In 1979 he separated and used the GI Bill to study auto mechanics at Technical College of the Lowcountry. In 1982, he joined the Civil Service working on Parris Island for six years in Recruit Sales. In 1983 he joined the Army National Guard as an Army Scout, drilling in Beaufort and at Fort Stewart. He was activated for Hurricane Hugo in 1989. He retired from the Guard with 22 years of Guard service in 2001. Three of his children are veterans and one granddaughter is a Master at Arms in the Navy. He belongs to the American Legion and the DAV.
