The Spanish Moss Trail celebrating in June

National Trails Day is Saturday, June 6

Staff reports

National Trails Day is Saturday, June 6, National Trails Month lasts all of June, and the Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail are inviting the Lowcountry community and visitors to the area to step outside, get moving and connect with nature this month to highlight the importance and value of Trails.

“We are incredibly proud of South Carolina, Beaufort County, the City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal for collaborating with the national celebration of Trails for the entire month of June,” Friends of the Spanish Moss Trail Executive Director Dean Moss said in a news release. “The Spanish Moss Trail, like other Trails around our beautiful country, has become a happy place that connects our community like no other. Whether you are biking to work, walking your dog, or taking in our spectacular Lowcountry water views, the Spanish Moss Trail offers a beautiful experience open for all to enjoy year round.”

Celebrations kick off Saturday, aligning with the American Hiking Society’s National Trails Day – a country-wide initiative to advocate for, maintain, and enjoy public trail spaces. South Carolina General Assembly, Beaufort County, City of Beaufort and the Town of Port Royal are all officially recognizing June as “Trails Month.”

To honor both National Trails Day and Trails Month, community members are encouraged to explore the Spanish Moss Trail throughout June. Families are encouraged to kick off their summer by enjoying the newly designated national Kids in Parks TRACK Trail. This one-mile experience, just for kids, starts at the Depot Trailhead with a map, custom activities, a StoryWalk and Little Library. The Friends will also be highlighting Trail facts, safety reminders, and native wildlife spotlights on social media all month long.
