Drainage project update: Craven Street re-opens for traffic

Staff reports

Temporary base paving and striping on Craven Street was completed earlier this week, allowing the street to be re-opened to traffic.

Drivers should use caution while traveling through the area, as the traffic signals at the intersection of Craven Street and Charles Street are currently flashing red, according to a media release from the City of Beaufort.

While construction is still underway, there will be no on-street parking on Craven Street between Charles and West Streets.

Craven Street is expected to close again within the next few months for final paving. Once an official date is provided, an update will be shared with the public, according to the release.

According to a release from last week, on Monday, Gulf Stream was to begin working on North Street. The intersection of Charles and North was to be be closed while crews began to cut open the asphalt and tree work took place. Following further study and discussion, there is good news, according to the City’s news release.

Recent modeling and testing have allowed the pipe size to be reduced from 60 inches to 48 inches for this area. This will allow the amount of earthwork needed to be scaled back and possibly reduce the amount of tree removal needed to finish this section of the project. There are still a few unknown variables in the ground; however, those will be addressed and worked through as they present themselves.

For the community and the affected area, this means less excavation depth and width, reduced impacts on private properties, and maintained drainage and flood reduction goals.

There will be very limited access to and from the Post Office’s (501 Charles Street) main parking area, according to the media release, so citizens are strongly encouraged to use the Burton and Port Royal post offices during this phase of construction. This phase of the project is projected to be a minimum of six weeks.

This six-week estimate is based on the understanding that there will be weather delays, possible utility delays, and coordination delays. The City continue to work with all parties affected by this project to accommodate parking, deliveries, or other needed requests.
