A Beaufort County teenager has been arrested in connection with the shooting of another teen in the downtown business district of Beaufort, police say.

Officers with the Beaufort Police Department responding to gunfire in the 200 block of Scott Street shortly after 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, found a teenager with multiple gunshot wounds, said department spokesman Capt. George Erdel in an email.

The victim, also from Beaufort County, was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was then airlifted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for further treatment.

About 45 minutes after the incident occurred, officers were notified that a 15-year-old who was involved in the incident wanted to turn himself in, Erdel said.

Investigators met with the teenager and his mother and conducted an interview. The suspect was then arrested for attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, Erdel said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was taken to a Department of Juvenile Justice facility in Columbia where he was being held until a hearing.

The condition of the victim is not known at this time. MUSC does not release information on patients who are victims of a violent crimes.

Police are continuing to investigate. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Investigator Tony Re at (843) 322-7960 or the department’s anonymous tip line at (843) 322-7938.
