Sea Island Presbyterian opens shelter as freezing temperatures hit Beaufort

From staff reports

With temperatures anticipated to reach down into the 20s this weekend in the Beaufort area, Sea Island Presbyterian has already opened a cold weather shelter with the support of local law enforcement agencies for those who have no place to go.

Temperatures were expected to get down near 30 degrees Friday night/early Saturday morning. The lows for Saturday and Sunday nights were projected to be similar, 29 and 30 degrees, respectfully.

The shelter, located at 81 Lady’s Island Drive in Beaufort, was slated to open at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday evenings and close at 8 a.m. the next day. Shelter hours on Sunday will be contingent on the weather.

For those who take advantage of the shelter, dinner, warm showers and breakfast will also be provided. Weapons, alcohol, smoking and pets are prohibited, while service animals are allowed.

“Blessed are those who take to heart the words of Jesus as he teaches us to step in and help those of special need and care,” the church’s statement on the opening of the shelter read.
