Families Against Book Bans is hosting a pre-screening of the documentary “Banned Together: The Fight Against Censorship” on Sunday, Sept. 22 at 3 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Lady’s Island.

The documentary follows three local young women during their senior year as they played a prominent role in “fighting for the books to return to the shelves” as Beaufort County School District navigated the reviewing process of a list of 97 books that were challenged for appropriateness of content after a complaint was filed by two Beaufort County residents in October 2022.

The film crew followed the student activists – who have since graduated – throughout their journey as they work to reinstate the 97 books to local school libraries, advocate at school board meetings, have meetings with national politicians and speak at the Right To Read Rally during the American Library Association’s annual conference in Chicago, according to the documentary’s description on their website.

The pre-screening is free to the public and will be followed with a question-and-answer session with members of the film.
