Life-saving care, quick thinking key for Heslin
Special to The Island News.
In the Beaufort Memorial emergency department, ER nurse Kaitlyn Heslin was caught off guard: nursing leaders and her colleagues were waiting to surprise her with a prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses.
Heslin, who began her career as a Beaufort Memorial ER technician about five years ago before completing her nursing degree at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, was nominated for the high-level nursing award due to her commitment to communication, patient safety and vigilance in the emergency department.
The nomination was submitted by her colleague, ER patient care technician Michelle Recchia, and detailed the frontline nurse’s quick thinking and dedication to patient care during an “exceptionally busy shift” in early April 2026.
While passing through the ER lobby to retrieve a wheelchair, Heslin noticed a patient checking in who appeared unwell. She stopped and assessed the situation, balancing immediate, critical care with compassion, skill, and patient advocacy.

Emergency department physician Dr. Luke Baxley then performed a neurological evaluation and expedited the patient to undergo imaging scans that detected a brain bleed.
“This situation highlights the critical importance of vigilance, teamwork and advocacy in patient care,” Recchia detailed in Heslin’s nomination. “Kaitlyn’s keen observation and initiative, combined with Dr. Baxley’s rapid response and clinical judgment, very likely contributed to a life-saving outcome.”
During the surprise ceremony in the Beaufort Memorial Pratt Emergency Center on Friday, Oct. 2, 2026, Heslin received the DAISY Award and a pin from emergency department director Kevin Kremer, BSN, RN.
“Kaitlyn started her career in nursing right here in the Beaufort Memorial ER, right at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic. That was a tough time to start; in the medical field, we were all still learning how to cope with this new world,” Kremer said. “Kaitlyn has been extraordinary since. She has a great sense of humor, and while at Beaufort Memorial, she has really grown as both a person and a nurse.”Â
About the DAISY Award
