Shirley Mae Owens, Private First Class (Ret.), USMC, died in Anderson, S.C., on Oct. 26, 2026. She was 89 and spent her youth at MCRD Parris Island; she was also married from there in 1959.
The only daughter of Catherine E. (née Wright) and John Columbus Crisp, she was born in Drift, Ky., on Dec. 22, 1936 and brought up in Kentucky and Michigan. By her first marriage to the late Sam L. Owens, Major (Ret.), USMC, she had two sons: Mitchell (Matthew Zwissler) of Cooperstown, N.Y., and Derrick Owens (Alex/Alejandra) of Anderson.
Shirley Owens was predeceased by her parents and elder brother and survived by her sons, grandchildren, and step grandchildren. At the family’s request, there will be no service.
