Two families displaced in 24-hour period after house fires

From staff reports

Early Wednesday evening, Nov. 29, the Burton and Sheldon Fire Districts, MCAS Fire and Rescue, and Beaufort County EMS responded to a reported house fire in Seabrook displacing a family of six.

Just before 6:30 p.m., emergency crews responded to a reported house fire on Cornelius Drive after the resident called 911. When fire crews arrived on scene, fire was visible coming through the roof of the single-story family home. The family had safely escaped.

Firefighters quickly brought the fire under control; however, the home suffered significant damages resulting in the displacement of two adults and four children. Red Cross was notified and is assisting the family.

The fire is believed to have been caused by a candle in a bedroom. No injuries were reported.

This was the second house fire for Burton fire crews in less than 24 hours. Just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, Burton and MCAS firefighters responded to a house fire on Hodge Drive in Burton. Firefighters quickly contained and extinguished a fire located inside a closet containing a water heater. While damages were limited to the closet and immediate area, a family of three – one adult and two teenagers – were displaced and being assisted by family members.

This fire is still under investigation but is believed to have been caused by an electrical issue. No injuries were reported.

As South Carolina enters into its most dangerous time of year for fires, Burton fire officials remind residents to check their smoke alarms; ensure the are less than 10 years old and have a battery. Residents needing assistance with smoke alarms are encouraged to call their local fire department.
