The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the discovery of unidentified skeletal remains found on Sunday, June 29, behind an unoccupied residence on St. Helena Island.

Police received a report regarding the remains around 5 p.m. on Sunday in the area of Sea Island Parkway (U.S. 21), and as of Tuesday afternoon, the circumstances surrounding the case are still under investigation, according to Lt. Daniel Allen with the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

It is unknown at this time how long the remains have been there or if they are connected to a prior case or need to be investigated as a new case.

Due to the skeletal nature of the remains, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office said it would be several days before they would have any information that they could potentially release regarding the case, and at this point, they could not comment.

Anyone with information about this case should contact the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency dispatch line at 843-524-2777.

Tips can be reported anonymously through Crime Stoppers of Beaufort County, by the P3 Tips App or by calling 844-847-7238 (844-TIPS-BFT).
