From staff reports
Mercy Me Living Sober is hosting a dinner and speaking engagement in recognition of International Drug Overdose Awareness Day at 5:30 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 27 at Carteret St. United Methodist Church, 408 Carteret St., Beaufort.
Organizers say too many families have suffered the terrible loss of a loved one from drug overdose. “These are our children, brothers, sisters, even our parents,” said Catherine Forester, who will be one of the speakers at the event. Forester lost her son, Michael, to an overdose last year.
“My heart is broken and the same thing could happen to anyone.”
She called it a shocking, international tragedy that happens more than people realize. Other speakers will include a medical professional and a drug counselor.
Many overdose deaths are due to the opioid epidemic, which has had widespread impact throughout the U.S. and the world. In addition, the dangerous drug fentanyl has been broadly available and inserted in commonly used drugs like marijuana. The results have been disastrous.
The event sponsor, Mercy Me Sober Living, is a local non-profit dedicated to helping alcoholics and addicts in recovery. The presentation includes a pulled pork dinner by Chef Brian of Sea Island Cooking, LLC. Admission is $30 or $50 per couple. A vegetarian option is also available.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The presentation begins at 7 p.m.
Reservations are required. For more information, call 843-263-2520 or visit www.facebook.com/MercyMeSober.org.
