John Paul II Catholic School has named Alan Lewis as its new head coach for boys basketball.

Lewis comes to JPII from Storm King School, a private boarding school located in Cornwall-on-Hudson, N.Y., where he served as the Assistant Headmaster for Student Life. Lewis and his wife Christina live in Bluffton.

“Coach Lewis brings a wealth of experience, having coached in the very competitive New England Prep School Athletic Council (NEPSAC), a conference that annually sends multiple athletes to Division I college programs,” JPII Principal John McCarthy said in a news release. “His teams were NEPSAC champions in 2016 and 2017, and he has been recognized as NEPSAC Class D Coach of the Year.”

He is a graduate of Hamilton College and received a master’s in educational leadership from the University of Southern Maine. Besides coaching, he will also be teaching math at JPII.

“I have been coaching basketball for 23 years now – the same time span that I have been working at schools,” Lewis said in a news release. “The opportunity to start fresh and help build a highly competitive basketball program at an emerging school were part of the attraction of JPII, as was the bridging of my faith and passion for basketball.”

Lewis’ basketball philosophy includes having a highly conditioned team that plays up-tempo, transition basketball and hard-nosed man-to-man defense.

“I hope to build a program that draws student-athletes from throughout the area,” Lewis said. “My ultimate goals are to win championships, graduate seniors who know what hard work is, and for our community to be proud of their accomplishments on and off the court.”
