High School Football Roundup: John Paul II falls just short; Battery Creek wins again

John Pail II’s workhorse running back Jadon Inabinett, center, muscles his way through the Ben Lippen defense Friday, Oct. 23, at Hardeeville Recreation Center. Despite Inabinett’s efforts, the hosting Golden Warriors got edged out by the Falcons 34-32. Bob Sofaly/The Island News

Jadon Inabinett rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries, and Alan Wolf added 116 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries and hooked up with Inabinett for a touchdown pass, but it wasn’t quite enough for the Golden Warriors to pull off the upset.

May River 43, Beaufort 29

Tony Cooper rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries, and Luc Tran scored on the ground and caught a touchdown pass from Jordan Wise on a trick play to help the Sharks pull away in the fourth quarter. May River’s Michael Poole racked up 13 tackles (two for loss) and added a rushing touchdown in the Sharks’ jumbo package. Sophomore quarterback Keaton Layman threw three touchdown passes to three different receivers for Beaufort.

Hilton Head 48, Colleton Co. 7

The Seahawks wrapped up back-to-back region titles for the first time since 1990 and 1991, as Derrick Raniszewski tossed three touchdown passes, and Thaddeus Czarnecki and Jayvin Risher each added rushing scores in a rout of the Cougars. Jeremiah Walters and Brayden Smith each returned a punt for a touchdown for Hilton Head.

Lucy Beckham 50, Bluffton 36

Kordell Holley rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries, and Jack Calendine and Amare Patterson hooked up for a pair of touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough for the Bobcats to keep pace with the Bengals on the road.

Battery Creek 14, Lake Marion 13

Eddie Heyward and E.J. Frazier each scored rushing touchdowns, and the Dolphins blocked an extra point to preserve a hard-fought road win. The Gators scored a late touchdown to pull within one, but Battery Creek blocked the point-after attempt to escape with the victory and set up a Region 5-2A title game when the Dolphins host Philip Simmons on Friday.

Whale Branch 26, Ridgeland 12

Takim Person picked off three passes and scored a rushing touchdown, and Kareem Bing, Jermaine Byson, and Jamar Bronner each added scores on the ground to help the Warriors beat the Jaguars on the road.

First Baptist 40, HHCA 35

Kres Langhals passed for 365 yards and four touchdowns and added a rushing score, but his four interceptions proved costly in a tough loss on the road for the Eagles. Sam Strum caught six passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, and Joey Houpt had seven catches for 114 yards and a score, surpassing JP Peduzzi’s school record for career receiving yards.

Patrick Henry 30, Cross Schools 28

Kai Sobey rushed for 256 yards and three touchdowns on 30 carries and threw a touchdown pass on a trick play to help the Patriots hold off the Stingrays at home. Chase Franklin rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown and returned a kickoff for a score for Cross.
