The Town of Port Royal is holding an event to bring awareness to veteran suicide at noon on Friday, Feb. 23.
Port Royal is adjusting the speed limit on Paris Avenue to 22 mph.
“The initiative is a testament to our community’s solidarity, compassion and unwavering support for our veterans,” according to a media release.
According to the release, on average, 22 veterans commit suicide every day, so lowering the speed limit to 22 mph is a a way to reflect that number.
“This change is not just a measure of traffic control but a profound tribute to those who have served our country and paid the ultimate price,” the release said.
The event is a collaboration with local veteran community leaders, including Janice L. Shelton of AMVETS Post 70.
The sign that is being unveiled on Friday is located near Port Royal Elementary School.
“This ceremony is more than an unveiling; it’s a promise to remember, to talk and to act,” the release said. “It symbolizes our collective commitment to not only honor those we’ve lost but also to foster a supportive environment for all veterans.”
