Orval Carr

Orval Franklin (Dickie) Carr, 64, of Yemassee, SC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at his residence.

The family received friends on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home.

Graveside funeral services were held on Monday, March 3, 2014 at 11 a.m. at Beaufort National Cemetery with full military honors, a reception followed at AmVets in Port Royal, SC.

Mr. Carr was born on August 7, 1949 in Ward, West Virginia. He is the son of the late Luther Carr and Roberta Bostick Carr.

Dickie served our country in the USMC, where he retired.  He was a life member of the VFW and AmVets.

Surviving are two sisters, Kay Purvis of Beaufort, SC and Ruby McConnell of Ohio; two brothers, Tommy and Sam Carr, both of Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made to the Disabled American Veterans, 702 Battery Creek Road, Beaufort, SC  29902.

Loring Charles Covington

Loring Charles Covington passed away on March 11, 2014 at age 81.

He was born in Savannah, GA on August 24, 1932, and moved to Beaufort, SC, where he attended Beaufort schools.  He graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, with a double major. Charles received his MBA from the University of Wisconsin and was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, an international honor society.  He was employed by Kimberly-Clark Corporation for 29 years and retired as the Director of Administration in Roswell, GA.

Charles served in the U.S. Air Force for four years as a pilot with the rank of captain. He was a member of Mt. Paran North Church of God where he was an Elder and Elder Emeritus as well as a member of the Missions Board for over 20 years.

Charles was a member of the International Water Lily and Water Garden Society and also served as administrative manager; he was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, Capt. John Collins Chapter, The Huguenot Society of South Carolina and the Cobb County Community Emergency Response Team (CERTS).

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Ann; son, David Covington of Rockmart, Georgia; daughter, Leigh Ann Jenkins; son-in-law, Chris Jenkins; and three grandsons: David, twins Nathan and Ryan Jenkins of Signal Mountain, Tennessee.

A graveside service was held at St. Helena Cemetery at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 16, 2014.

Nils Dahl

Nils J. Dahl, of Dataw Island, South Carolina, age 84, died peacefully March 11, 2014 with his family by his side after a brief period of declining health.

Born and raised in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, he graduated from Brooklyn Prep (’47) and Georgetown University (’51) and then honorably served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corp. He began his career as a salesman with Celanese Corporation before joining Crystal Thermoplastics in Cumberland, Rhode Island where he was president and co-owner. He was known in his industry for his wit, good humor and fair dealings. A banker once commented to his son, “your dad is a pain to deal with, but he’s also one of our favorite clients.”

Nils loved sports and was an avid tennis, paddle tennis and golfer in Barrington, R.I., where he made a hole-in-one on each of the par three’s at RICC.  After 37 years in Rhode Island he made golf his passion while living in the South Carolina Lowcountry for another 18 years. While they gave it their best efforts, none of his children were ever able to beat Nils at tennis or golf.

Nils was a devoted husband of 59 wonderful years to Joan Flaherty Dahl and loving father to five children: Gregory Dahl (Halina) of Wilbraham, MA; Patricia Dahl of New York, NY; John Dahl (Kimberly) of Spring, TX; Norena Howard (Terrence) of Fairfield, CT and Nils Dahl (Christine) of Southport, CT; nine grandchildren: Stacie Routt (Travis), JoDe Hollis (Cory), Nils Dahl, Nathan Dahl, Catherine Howard, Joseph Dahl, Matthew Howard, Gabrielle Howard and Carolyn “Andie” Dahl.

Family was everything to Nils; he was also the doting younger brother to his beloved sisters, Kathyleen “Kay” O’Leary and Norena “Cissie” Dahl who preceded him, and Norma “Nonie” Melvin of Southbury, CT who survives him, as well as his 13 nephews and nieces.

He will be remembered by all for his boisterous laugh and his witty storytelling.

A memorial mass was celebrated at 11:30 a.m. Friday, March 14, 2014 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church on Lady’s Island.

The family suggests memorials take the form of donations to Beaufort Memorial Hospital or The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration (eyedonation.org).

James Daise

James Daise, 55, of the Frogmore community on St. Helena Island and son of Joe and Irene Pope Daise, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at the Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Phylicia Garry

Phylicia “Pumpkin” Anaya Garry, 2, of Burton and daughter of Elizabeth Eileen Eason of Burton and Derrell Brenden Garry of St. Helena Island, died Thursday, March 6, 2014 at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC.

Viewing was held March 11 from 4-7 p.m. in Helen Galloway’s Memorial Chapel of Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Charity Inspirational Church of God in Christ, 1706 Old Shell Road, in Port Royal.  Burial was in the Bahia’ Cemetery on St. Helena Island.

Ethel Jenkins

Ethel Ancrum Washington Jenkins, 90, of the Fripp Point community on St. Helena Island and widow of Andrew Washington, Sr. and William Buster Jenkins died Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the home of her daughter.

A wake service was held Thursday, February 27, 2014 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Scottsville Baptist Church, 110 Olde Church Road, St. Helena Island.

Funeral services were at noon Friday, February 28, 2014 at Bethesda Christian Fellowship, 32 Martin Luther King Drive, St. Helena Island, SC.  There was no viewing after the eulogy.

Burial was in the Beaufort National Cemetery.

Frances Woods Montcalm

Frances Woods Montcalm, 88, of St. Helena Island, SC, died Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at her nephew’s residence.

The family received friends on Friday, February 28, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Anderson Funeral Home.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in Carl Anderson Memorial Chapel with interment in Beaufort Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Montcalm was born on August 20, 1925, on McTeer Farms in Grays Hill, SC.  She is the daughter of the late Henry M. Woods and Elsie W. Woods.

She was a member of The Baptist Church of Beaufort. After graduating Beaufort High School in 1942, she worked at the Taylor Shop on Parris Island. She also worked at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, SC as a welder. She managed her father’s store, Woods Grocery on St. Helena Island for 25 years, now known as Boonedocks Restaurant.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Montcalm and her baby sister, Fostine Gay.

Surviving are three sisters, Gloria W. Lightsey of Beaufort, SC; Doris W. Small Gainesville, GA and Maxine W. Griffin of Wahala, SC; (caregivers) nephew, Michael S. Gay, wife Cindy; Cara Russell and Debbie Anderson; numerous other nieces and nephews, Linda, Larry, Tommy, Barbara, Susan, Sarah and Cassie.

The family suggests that donations be made to Hospice Care of America, 1800 Paris Ave., Port Royal, SC  29935.

Melvin Mungin

Melvin “Mel” Mungin, 67, formerly of St. Helena Island and husband of Sarah Green Mungin, died Friday, March 14, 2014 in Alegent Midlands Hospital in Papillion, Nebraska. Arrangements by Chisholm Galloway Home for Funerals.

 

Lottie Carolyn Summerall

Lottie Carolyn Summerall, 86, of St. Helena Island, SC, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday morning, February 23, 2014 at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Carolyn was born at home to John Austin Jones and Sallie Sue Hayes Jones on September 24, 1927 in Lewisburg, Tenn. and was raised in Lewisburg and Tullahoma, Tenn.

On February 17, 1945 she married Odis Crawford Summerall in Beaufort, SC and she worked for many years for the S.C Forestry Commission, retiring in 1972. Carolyn was also an accomplished homemaker, seamstress, cook and gardener and she never met a dog or cat that she didn’t love. In her last years she very much enjoyed watching the birds on the feeders outside of her sun room.

She was preceded in death by her husband Odis in 1977, her brother Carl Allen Jones in 1989, her sister Flora Sue Lankas in 2003 and her sister Catherine Leona Collins in 2004.

Carolyn is survived by three sons, David B. Summerall (Linda) of Frogmore, SC, John C. Summerall (Sharon) of Okatie, SC, and Timothy A. Summerall of Beaufort; three daughters: Cathleen S. Murphy (Frank) of Beaufort, Susan C. Summerall of Beaufort, and Barbara S. Fraley (Dennis) of Lake City, SC; a niece, Carmelita J. Hair (J.A.) of John’s Island, SC; and a nephew, William G. Lankas (Carolyn) of Sneads Ferry, NC. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Suzette Mujica Grice (Tommy) of Mobile, Al; Scott Mujica (Sissy) of Beaufort, Christopher Polk (Rebecca) of Beaufort, Travis Polk of Beaufort,  Craig Summerall (Gini) of Lexington, SC, Amellia Summerall Applegate of Beaufort, David Summerall of Dandridge, TN, Williams Summerall and Wesley Summerall both of Columbia, SC, and ten great grandchildren, Eric, Corey & Isabelle Mujica of Beaufort,  Daniel Grice of Mobile, Al, James, Eliza & Emma Polk and Brody Applegate, all of Beaufort, and Gray and McFall Summerall of Lexington, SC.

A private memorial service was held at the Beaufort National Cemetery on Friday February 28, 2014. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Beaufort Memorial Hospital Foundation, PO Box 2233, Beaufort, SC.
