VETERANS OF THE WEEK – GENE & ROSA ROBERTSON

Beaufort’s Gene and Rosa Robertson, 62 and 59, respectively, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in Decatur, Ga., and El Paso, Texas, in 1977 and 1980, respectively. Both attended Boot camp at Parris Island, Gene entering the field of finance and Rosa that of administration. Gene stayed to serve at PI while Rosa went to Okinawa and later Iwakuni, Japan. Gene next served in Barstow, Calif., followed by a tour back at PI and as a recruiter in Georgia. Rosa transferred to MCAS El Toro, then with the reserves at El Paso before transferring back to PI. After their marriage in 1984, they transferred to MCAS Yuma, later to Okinawa followed by duty at 29 Palms before their final assignments at MCAS Beaufort. Gene retired in 1999 as a Master Sergeant; Rosa in 2001 as a Gunnery Sergeant. Gene moved 14 times during his 22 years of service. They have three children.
