Beaufort’s Bill Young, 83, joined the United States Marine Corps in South Bend, Ind., in 1960. After Boot Camp at Parris Island, he was assigned to infantry duty at Vietnam, including amphibious landings. In all, he served four tours in Vietnam, returning to Camp Pendleton between each.
He was also trained in Motor Transport for transporting VIPs including members of Congress, spending six years at Parris Island with driving assignments wherever needed. He retired in 1990 from Camp Pendleton as a Gunnery Sergeant with 30 years of service. He then moved back to Beaufort.
