Oyster restoration

More than 75 volunteers came out to Hunting Island last week to assist with the Oyster Reef Restoration project. South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, South Carolina State Parks and the Friends of Hunting Island coordinated the successful event that rehabilitates oysters reefs by using recycled oyster shells. A human chain was formed that transported bagged oyster shells from the Nature Center to the pluff mud bank. Once the reef is established, new oysters will attach to old oyster shells, creating habitat and food for the salt marsh ecosystem.
