John Paul II hires new Athletic Direcor

From staff reports

John Paul II Catholic School has named Tom Smith its new Athletic Director.

“We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Smith to the JPII community,” JPII President David Lima said in a news release. “His passion for student-athletes and his commitment to excellence make him the ideal leader to take our athletics program to the next level.”

Smith will oversee all Golden Warrior sports programs and the athletic facility expansion — a central component of the school’s “Where Faith and Innovation Meet” capital campaign currently underway. According to the release, Smith’s expertise in strategic planning, facility design, and student-athlete mentorship aligns with JPII’s mission to form students who live with purpose, lead with integrity, and walk with Christ.

“My goal with student-athletes is to mentor their holistic development through sport, providing a well-rounded experience that begins with an investment in leadership and life skills,” Smith said in a news release. “We must create a culture of continuous development, adaptation, and creativity to prepare them for their JPII career and beyond. Kids will respond to the environment they’re in.”

Prior to joining JPII, Smith served as Athletic Director at St. Mary’s School in Annapolis, Md., where he led the development and management of comprehensive athletic offerings. With extensive experience in athletic administration, he has a proven track record of fostering competitive, well-rounded sports programs that prioritize student growth and development.

Smith is a graduate of both the University of South Carolina and West Virginia University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture.
