Hunting Island to remain closed through the weekend

By Mike McCombs

If you were hoping to head out to Hunting Island and hit the beach this weekend, you’re going to be disappointed.

According to Hunting Island State Park’s official Twitter account, the park will remain closed through at least Sunday, July 19.

The park was initially closed during the day Tuesday, July 7, when the island got 8 inches of rain. Between July 7 and Wednesday, July 8, Hunting Island received 12.75 inches of rain. The majority of the park’s roads are submerged.

“Our day use & trails will remain closed through at least the close of business Sunday 19th of July,” Park Manager J.W. Weatherford tweeted Wednesday. “Most of our roads are still impassable. Most of our parking lots are still submerged.”

Still, however, the campground remains open. Weatherford said that “campers with reservations will continue to be allowed into the campground.”
