Contract crews for Dominion Energy were back at work this week, removing more palmetto trees such as these 10 on Elliott Street. Owner Bill Sammons estimated the trees were more than 200 years old but were no match for the utility company’s policy to protect overhead power lines. City officials have responded to complaints about excessive trimming and tree removal with “our hands are tied.” Reports are more than 75-80 palmettos were expected to be cut down before the project is complete. – Lolita Huckaby
