GGIF will distribute food Saturday

From staff reports

After a successful Bags to Go food distribution effort on Juneteenth, the Gullah Geechee Initiative Foundation is looking to repeat that success.

“After such great support and participation for our Food Distribution Project – 200 bags of groceries were distributed to individuals and families on St. Helena Island needing assistance during this Pandemic crisis – GGIF is looking forward to continuing to support the St. Helena Island community by sponsoring the Mandela Day Food Distribution Project in celebration of the 102th birthday anniversary of (South African) President Nelson Mandela,” GGIF founder Kamal M. Wigfall said in an email.

The Mandela Day Food Distribution Project will be held on Saturday, July 18 at Martin Luther King Memorial Park, located on the corner of Sea Island Parkway and MLK Drive. Food distribution starts at 3 p.m. and will continue until the last bag is distributed.

According to Wigfall, GGIF’s goal for Mandela Day is to increase the distribution to 300 bags.

The Gullah Geechee Initiative Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit organization that provides programs to promote cultural enrichment, character development, academic excellence, athletics and community outreach programs to the under-served people residing primarily on St. Helena Island.
