JPII rally falls short vs. Blazers

John Paul II fought back from an early 23-point deficit, but the Golden Warriors couldn’t dig all the way out of their early hole on the road, falling 30-20 on Friday, Sept. 11 at Bethesda Academy.

Led by quarterback Antjuan McKay, who gashed the Golden Warriors on the ground, the Blazers bolted out to a 23-0 lead, but JPII didn’t go quietly.

The Golden Warriors got on the board before halftime and recovered an onside kick after pulling within 10 in the fourth quarter but couldn’t close the gap any further.

Jeremiah Young led JPII with 142 rushing yards and a touchdown on 19 carries and added 55 passing yards, while Austin McIntosh added 57 yards on 20 carries and Jackson Ogden picked up 45 yards and two scores on eight carries.

Hayden Jennings led the defense with nine tackles (two solo) and a fumble recovery.

JPII (1-2) is off this week before hosting Pinewood Prep on Sept. 24.

For the second straight week, Beaufort Academy used a strong ground game and a stingy defense to claim a hard-fought victory, winning 28-12 on Friday, Sept. 11 at Colleton Prep.

Ja’Sean Lawson rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns, and Braydon Dineen added a touchdown run for the Eagles, whose defense helped preserve the lead with two fourth-down stops and two goal-line stands.

The Eagles jumped out to a 7-0 lead and led 7-6 at halftime before getting the ground game rolling in the second half. They extended the advantage to 20-6, then held off a rally from the War Hawks before punching in another score to clinch the win.

BA (2-1) opens region play at Northwood Academy next Friday
