Don’t miss the sensational soups, salads and sandwiches at the new Boundary Street Cafe

While it may be bittersweet to see one restaurant close, it is reassuring when another opens that remains committed to serving delicious, healthy dishes. Such is the case when Shoofly recently closed, but the new Boundary Street Cafe that opened in the same location is a great addition to the Beaufort food scene.

The restaurant is a family affair, with Chef Tony Gates in the kitchen, Nicole Gates serving and assisting customers, and even Tony’s mom, Rosaria, originally from Italy, helping out.

The Lunch Bunch started with three excellent soups: Low Country She Crab; Chicken Tortilla with crisp tortilla strips, avocado, cilantro, Monterrey jack cheese and lime; and the soup du jour, a savory Corn Chowder.

Irene chose the Chicken Salad on a spinach wrap with a side of fruit. She enjoyed the special ingredients such as craisins, thyme and toasted almonds that made the chicken salad stand out.

Elizabeth tried the Whole Grains Salad made with baby greens, tri-color organic quinoa, whole grain millet, organic amaranth, roasted beets, goat cheese, cucumber, tomato and seared local shrimp tossed in an orange-poppy seed vinaigrette. A healthy choice, for sure, but packed with flavor.

I absolutely loved my Chicken and Brie Panini. It combined some of my favorite ingredients — chicken breast, Brie,

bacon, avocado with a raspberry dijon spread on wheat berry bread — to create an awesome sandwich that I could probably eat every day.

Buck was very pleased with his Monte Cristo, which is featured on the Sunday brunch menu. As Nicole pointed out, if a diner requests that dish or has other food specifications, the items are made to order and the chef is glad to accommodate individual needs.

The menu also features burgers and specialty entrees such as shrimp and grits, crab cakes, and a White Cheddar Pimento Cheese and Pork Panini. Don’t forget to ask about the daily desserts.

Boundary Street Cafe is located at 1209 Boundary Street, Suite C, Beaufort, SC, 29902. It is open for breakfast and lunch Wednesday through Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and for Sunday brunch 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For take out or catering, call 843-379-1811.
