On the morning of February 13, 2015, Battery Creek High School Officials notified Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officers of a possible incident of a student in possession of a handgun on school property. The Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation into the incident and identified a juvenile student had in fact been in possession of two handguns and one knife in the parking lot area, prior to school starting. The weapons were recovered later in the day off of school property by a student, who found them in his vehicle. It appears the weapons were stored in the student’s vehicle without his knowledge or consent. Preliminary investigation revealed the handguns and knife were never brought into the school building and there were no threats of violence to other students or school staff conveyed by the juvenile. The juvenile will be petitioned to the Family Court for charges to be determined relating to the possession of weapons on school property. The investigation is ongoing.
