From staff reports
The annual Young Life Fishing Derby Tournament offers avid fishermen and women the opportunity to be involved in a competitive fishing tournament, while also rewarding younger fishers for their participation.
This year’s tournament will be held Friday, Oct. 2 and Saturday, Oct. 3, and all tournament proceeds support Beaufort Young Life.
The Captain’s Meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 2 at Beaufort Boat and Dock, 1734 Ribaut Rd., Port Royal.
The following morning fishing will begin at 6 a.m., and weigh in will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club, 30 Yacht Club Dr.
The weigh-in will be immediately followed by the awards ceremony and raffle drawings.
There will be seven different qualifying species: redfish, trout, flounder, black drum, sheepshead, king mackerel and Spanish mackerel.
Entry fee is $200. There is no limit to number of anglers on a boat. Last year, a total of $10,000 in prizes were awarded to off-shore and on-shore participants. This year there will be seven opportunities to win, one for each species, so a participant can win multiple times.
Young Life, a teen outreach ministry, is a world-class organization for adolescents. Young Life’s staff and volunteers enter the world of kids, focusing on what matters to them — fun, adventure, friendship and a sense of significance.
