Whale Branch girls basketball got back on track over the holiday break, as the Warriors won both of their games at the Northwestern Trojan Classic in Rock Hill.

The Warriors opened the tournament with a 61-31 trouncing of York Prep on Tuesday and kept it rolling with a 39-24 victory over Broome on Wednesday.

Senior guard Kynew Barnwell went off for 26 points in the opening rout of York Prep, as Whale Branch bolted to a 12-point lead after one quarter and ran it up to 34-14 at halftime. Erin Rivers put up 13 points, Kiana Smashum added 10 points, and Layla Love had eight in the win.

Barnwell had another big game against Broome, scoring 14 points – including five in the fourth quarter – to help the Warriors shake off a slow start. Broome led 12-2 after one quarter, as Whale Branch was held without a field goal in the opening period, but the Warriors outscored the Centurions 19-2 in the second quarter to take control.

Love scored nine points and Rivers added eight in the finale. Smashum had five points before fouling out, and Heaven Grant came up big off the bench in her absence, scoring four fourth-quarter points.

Whale Branch (6-4) was scheduled to play a region game at St. John’s on Tuesday.
