VETERAN OF THE WEEK – SKIP HARRELL

Beaufort’s Skip Harrell, 70, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1969 in Suffolk, Va. After boot camp at Parris Island, he trained and served in construction/operation of short airfields. His first assignment was to Bogue Field, N.C., followed by Iwakuni and Okinawa, Japan where he worked in security. He transferred back to Bogue Field before serving as a Drill Instructor at Parris Island. He next served at Cherry Point, N.C., followed by duty at MCAS Futenma, Okinawa where he worked in maintenance. His final assignment was at MCAS Beaufort. He separated from active duty in 1982 as a Staff Sergeant with more than 13 years of service.
