VETERAN OF THE WEEK: OTIS WHITEHEAD

Otis Whitehead, 86, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in Miami in 1952.

He was trained as a Machine Gunner and saw service at Lejeune twice, Pendleton, Okinawa twice, Quantico, and in Vietnam at Khe Shanh. He rose to Master Sergeant before earning a commission in 1972. He retired with 25 years of service in 1977 as a Captain, USMC. Later he worked with Comprehensive Health in the Lowcountry and, after earning a college degree, he worked with the local USMC Jr. ROTC for 9 years.
