Beaufort’s Mike Hammer, 53, joined the United States Army in Indianapolis, Ind., in 1991. After Basic Training at Fort Sill, Okla., he trained in field artillery, specializing in multiple launch rocket systems. He was deployed to Hanau, Germany and then to Bamberg, Germany during Desert Shield/Storm. Following that, he separated in 1993 and began a series of work environments including a job as an armed security guard at Walmart for 13 years and as a fast-food service manager. Today he owns Hammer Time Cleaning and Sunset Slush Hilton Head serving Italian ice.
