American Legion Beaufort Post 207 brings you Beaufort’s Larry Millender, 75, who joined the United States Marine Corps in Montgomery, Ala., in 1968. After Boot Camp at Parris Island, he was assigned to Montfort Point Camp Lejeune as a cook. He next served as a cook for two years at MCAS Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. His final duty station was back at Parris Island. He separated in 1972 and then used the GI Bill to attend TCL in Hotel/Motel Management. He then began a long career at various restaurants and club houses on Hilton Head Island and ended with 30 years at Sea Pines Plantation. Today he lives in Burton, has volunteered for 10 years with Second Helpings and is 70% disabled with Parkinsonism. He has a son who retired from the Navy as a Master Chief (E-9).
