VETERAN OF THE WEEK – “DANCING DON” WERSLER

Beaufort’s “Dancing Don” Wersler, 97, enlisted in the United States Marine Corps straight from high school in June 1943. He served during World War II aboard the USS Vincennes (CL-64) as a member of a 20mm anti-aircraft gun crew. Vincennes saw service in the battles of the Mariana Islands, Philippines, Leyte Gulf, Formosa, and off Okinawa and Japan. He served 24 years in the Corps at a variety of posts from Hawaii to Newport, including Parris Island. He retired as a Master Sergeant and is known all around Beaufort for his dancing and volunteer work.
