Veteran of the Week – Alvin Harvey

Beaufort’s Alvin Harvey, 53, was commissioned from the Army ROTC at the University of South Carolina in 1993. After Officer Basic Training at Fort Sill, Okla., he served with the South Carolina Army National Guard as a Field Artillery Officer in Lancaster, S.C. In 2004 he deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He then returned to serve with the S.C. Army National Guard during emergency actions. He rose to be a Senior Battalion Captain at the S.C. Joint Operation Center, where he was in charge of deploying equipment and personnel throughout the state during many natural disasters, including floods and hurricanes. 

In 2020 he retired as a Major. During much of his Guard time he served for 21 years with the Beaufort City Police Department. He coaches Track and Field at Beaufort High School, earning S.C. State Coach of the Year in 2018 and 2019. He is a member of the American Legion Post 207, the DAV and is active with the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.
