Two arrested in morning shooting

At approximately 3:34 a.m. on Jan. 22, 2012, a Beaufort police officer on patrol heard what he believed to be gunshots come from the area of the Kangaroo Express located at 290 Robert Smalls Parkway.  As he pulled into the location he observed a man run to a car which left at a high rate of speed. He then located a 33-year-old man who had been shot multiple times while in a vehicle in the parking lot. Another officer located the vehicle that was seen leaving the location and attempted to stop it. The vehicle fled and finally stopped after a brief pursuit. During the chase a .45 caliber handgun was thrown out the window of the suspect vehicle and recovered.

The occupants of the vehicle were identified as 24-year-old Marvin Huggins and 22-year-old Devonte Akins. Surveillance video and witness statements confirmed that these were the suspects involved in the shooting.

Marvin Huggins has been charged with attempted murder, conspiracy and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Devonte Akins has been charged with attempted murder and conspiracy.

The victim was transported to the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. His condition is not believed to be life threatening. The investigation is not complete at this time. Early information indicates that the shooting was the result of an earlier dispute over a woman at a nightclub. Anyone with additional information on this case is requested to call investigator Carter at (843) 322-7966.
