Smyth named Freshman of the Week

Former Beaufort High multi-sport standout Jeffrey Smyth is enjoying an outstanding freshman season at Presbyterian College, and it just got even better.

Smyth was named the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week after anchoring the Blue Hose defense in a 24-14 win over Gardner-Webb on Saturday.

The defensive back had a career-high 13 tackles, along with his first career interception, to help the Blue Hose hold the Bulldogs to 278 total yards and shut them out in the second half.

Smyth ranks fourth on the team with 50 tackles in 10 games this season, and he ranks third on the squad with 5.5 tackles for loss. His 5.0 tackles per game are the second-most among Big South freshmen.
