Shots fired near Broad River Bridge cause 3-vehicle accident

Shots fired at a vehicle near the Broad River Bridge on S.C. Highway 170 caused a multi-vehicle accident on Tuesday, Oct. 20, officials say.

Reports of gun shots from “unknown suspects” came in just after 3 p.m., according to an advisory from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The shooting caused a three-vehicle accident in front of the Circle-K gas station, in the 800 block of Robert Smalls Parkway.

The suspects abandoned their vehicle a short distance from the scene and fled on foot, according to the sheriff’s office. Officers searched the area with a K-9 team but were unable to find anyone involved in the shooting, the advisory said.

Traffic was blocked for about 30 minutes on the bridge, according to Chief Alan Beach with the Port Royal Police Department. The department is continuing to investigate.
