Shorthanded LIMS excels at county wrestling meet

From staff reports

Lady’s Island Middle School (LIMS) traveled to Hilton Head Island High School on Saturday, Dec. 16 for the Lowco County Wrestling Tournament. While LIMS only brought seven wrestlers, one of the smallest teams in the event, they took fourth place as a team, behind Hilton Head, River Ridge, and Robert Smalls, respectively, whose teams range from 15 to 25 wrestlers.

No team had more first-place finishers than Lady’s Island.

At the 96-pound weight class, Santino Comunale pinned his way through the tournament. Santino was the first to wrestle for first place and he set the tone for the rest of LIMS. In the championship round with a lead of 7-3, he pinned the undefeated 2022 state qualifier from McCracken in the first period, securing the title of Beaufort County Champion.

At the 108-pound weight class, Tyasia Legree also pinned her way through the tournament. In the championship round, she pinned a wrestler from John Paul II who had bested her earlier in the year. Legree was the only female wrestler to finish in first place and the second Beaufort County Champion for LIMS.

At the 135-pound weight class, Cameron Posey earned two pins and one win by decision. In the championship match, he took an early lead against a talented competitor from Bridges Prep. Cameron established his mat dominance early, before pinning his opponent in the third period and becoming the third Beaufort County Champion for LIMS

At the 145-pound weight class, Isaiah Scott also pinned his way through the tournament. Isaiah proved to be the dominant wrestler in his weight class throughout the tournament, giving up very few points all day. He secured his title with a second-period pin against a tough wrestler from Hilton Head Island. With his victory, Scoot became the fourth Beaufort County Champion from LIMS.

All four of the Lady’s Island Middle School wrestlers in the championships won their final matches by pinning their opponents. Alanna O’Quinn and Blake Martin also had good showings, placing fourth and helping to secure the team points needed for a fourth- place team finish.
