Sea Island Garden Club celebrates 87 years

From staff reports

Members of the Sea Island Garden Club (SIGC) met on Wednesday, March 13 at the home of Tei Tober for their annual birthday party.

This year, the members celebrated 87 years of cultivating friendships while cultivating beauty around town. Established in 1937, Sea Island is the second oldest garden club in Beaufort.

Through the years, projects have revolved around beautifying areas such as the Beaufort National Cemetery. However, during World War II, the members pivoted their focus to supporting such organizations as the Red Cross and the USO. Currently, SIGC is involved in projects at the National Cemetery as well as the Pat Conroy Literary Center.

SIGC is also enthusiastically partnering with Clemson University and Coosa Elementary School on their Garden STEM Curriculum, where students plant, care for, and harvest seasonal vegetables.

Lessons learned in the garden are used as educational springboards in all subjects of study. SIGC is especially proud to have a role in educating children about gardening and conservation.
