Beaufort High concert band rated excellent
The Beaufort High School Sea Island Symphonic Band earned an “Excellent Rating” at the senior high school portion of the S.C. Concert Band Performance Assessment at West Ashley High School.
The S.C. Concert Band Performance Assessment was held over two weeks in Charleston.
“It’s wonderful that we have so many talented young musicians in our schools,” interim superintendent Herb Berg said in a release. “And it goes without saying that when our student musicians are honored, we are also honoring the outstanding educators who teach them.”
The Concert Performance Assessment consists of a stage performance and sight reading. Bands perform on stage for three judges who independently score each performance using rubrics based on state and national standards for music education.
Following the stage performance, bands sight-read a piece of music they have never seen. The band is given six minutes to study the piece, then must play for and be rated by two different judges. The scores of all five judges are combined to determine overall ratings.
