Sailing Club youth to represent US in international regatta

The Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is delighted to announce that Alex Mazzeo, 13, son of Paul and Lisa Mazzeo of Beaufort, has been selected to represent the United States at the 30th International Lake Garda Optimist Class sailboat regatta near Verona, Italy this March.

“We are all very proud of Alex.  He’s worked hard to build his skills and is a tough competitor,” said Dr. Ricky Akers, chairman of the Club’s Junior Sailing program. Optimists are small, single-handed sailboats that children begin sailing at about age 8. “Boys and girls learn to sail and race in Optimists.  In addition to sailing skills, they gain confidence, self reliance and problem solving skills that benefit them throughout life.  It’s really fun to watch,” Akers said.

Last year, Drummond Koppernaes (then 14), son of Christian and Robin Koppernaes of Beaufort and also a participant in the Club’s Junior Sailing program, was selected to represent the US in a similar regatta in Holland.

The Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is located on the banks of the Beaufort River on Lady’s Island. The club has 300 member families and promotes sports and sportsmanship via its sailing, power boating, tennis, kayaking, swimming and rowing programs and facilities. More information about the club is available by contacting the General Manager, Milledge Webb at 843-441-2094.
