League of Women Voters to hear about book bans

The League of Women Voters of Beaufort is beginning its 2024 activities as the year holds key elections for the state and nation. Members and friends are invited to join and become involved with the community through the League’s new structure.

The first General Membership Meeting of 2024 will be held at 5 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11 at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Beaufort, 178 Sams Point Road, Beaufort.

Special speaker, Mary Foster of Families Against Book Bans, will discuss how losing our rights and freedoms begins at home with book bans. The League will also meet in collaboration circles for members to interact and to get involved. The event is free and open to the public. 

Omega Psi Phi hosting Seafood Bash

The Beaufort area chapter of Omega Psi Phi is hosting a Seafood Bash from 2 to 6 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 13 at Live Oaks Park in Port Royal, 904 14th Street.

Fish platters are $20, while oysters are $35.

MLK Parade set for Monday

A parade honoring Martin Luther King Jr. is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. on Monday. 

The parade will proceed from Adventure Street to Boundary to Carteret and Bay Streets. The parade is sponsored by the Beaufort County Ministerial Alliance.

City offices to close Monday for MLK holiday

City of Beaufort offices will be closed on Monday, Jan. 15 in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Beaufort Digital Corridor accepting applications for anticipated board openings

The Beaufort Digital Corridor is now accepting applications for anticipated board openings in 2024. The application deadline is January 31.
The board’s nomination task force will review all applications and notify candidates for interview. Candidates will be evaluated on the following criteria to determine eligibility: Previous volunteer/leadership experience; involvement with the Beaufort Digital Corridor; skill/expertise relevant to support the BDC’s current mission; fundraising experience; leadership attributes; and commitment.

Certified Barbecue Judging Class coming to Columbia

The South Carolina Barbecue Association (SCBA) will hold a one-day seminar in Columbia to train new barbecue judges. The seminar is Saturday, Feb. 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the recreation hall at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, located at 1715 Bull Street.

Registration for the seminar is open to SCBA members and costs $45 per person, which includes a catered barbecue lunch. Non-members may join SCBA prior to or while registering for the seminar to be eligible to attend. SCBA annual membership dues are $55 for an individual or $70 for a family.

The seminar is the first step in becoming a SCBA Certified Barbecue Judge. After completing the class, potential judges will continue their training with hands-on experience as novice judges at three SCBA-sanctioned barbecue competitions. Competitions are held around the state at festivals and fairs, as well as other community events or stand-alone BBQ contests.
