Perseids meteor shower this week

Perseids meteor shower activity peaks this week between Thursday, Aug. 11 and Friday, Aug. 12.

Typically one of the best meteor showers of the year, the Perseids occur as the Earth passes through debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle.

The United Way of the Lowcounty needs volunteer tutors.

Reading volunteers are trained and matched with students in Grades 1-3 who are identified by school literacy specialists as needing additional help with reading. Students are tutored in-person at select Beaufort and Jasper elementary schools for one to two hours a week during the school year. The program starts in October. VITA volunteers needed

The Lowcountry Area Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Coalition (LAVC) is seeking dedicated volunteers to provide free tax assistance to eligible taxpayers who need help preparing their tax returns. LAVC serves 10 locations in Beaufort, Jasper and surrounding counties.
