Emilie Clair Nason, an 11th-grader at Beaufort Academy won the annual American Legion Post 9 Oratorical Competition on Saturday at Beaufort Academy, although by default as other competitors dropped out. Nason still gave her oratory regarding the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and the proliferation of false news and misinformation hindering Americans’ ability to make wise choices regarding their government. Nason said, “Misinformation is the poison of Democracy.” Nason is president of the BA Speech and Debate Club, a member of student government and plans to attend Wake Forest University following graduation.
