Mike McCombs

McCombs, new editor of The Island News

We are delighted to introduce our new editor, Mike McCombs. A 1997 graduate of Clemson University, McCombs worked as sports editor and later news editor of The Tiger, South Carolina’s oldest student newspaper, before landing his first “real job” at the Beaufort Gazette, where he worked for long-time editor Jeff Kidd. After nearly 15 years on the sports desk of the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, he returned to the Lowcountry in 2012 as sports editor of the Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette, where he worked until 2016.

“I came back to the Lowcountry in 2012 because this is where I wanted to be,” says McCombs. “This is the community in which I wanted to make my home, and I am grateful for the opportunity to play a meaningful role in the community.”

McCombs is a 2009 graduate of the Maynard Institute for Journalism Education’s Summer Editing Program At the University of Nevada. He has been involved in multiple projects that earned Associated Press Sports Editors accolades, and has been awarded numerous South Carolina Press Association awards for everything ranging from column writing to page design.
