Every time I eat at Shoofly Kitchen on Boundary Street in Beaufort, it reminds me of the iconic diners found in almost every small town where I grew up in northern New Jersey. The lively atmosphere, the open kitchen, the friendly service and, most importantly, the delicious home-cooked food make Shoofly a favorite among locals.
I had Mike’s Gamecock Grinder made with grilled chicken, bacon, tomato and melted Provolone with a secret sauce served toasted on a deli roll. I try to stay neutral when it comes to the rivalry between the USC Gamecocks and the Clemson Tigers, but after eating this sandwich, I could be persuaded to cheer for the Gamecocks. The warm, soft roll and yummy ingredients created melt-in-your-mouth goodness. I liked it too because it wasn’t so big and overwhelming, but it was just the right size so I could enjoy every bite.
Nikki tried the soup and sandwich special that came with homemade French Onion soup and half of a Roast Beef Panini made with roast beef, Brie and french fried onions served on grilled panini bread. She said it was really tasty and the soup was good for dipping.
David ordered the soup of the day, the gumbo made with chicken and sausage, and it was
excellent. He also liked his roast beef and Provolone sandwich.
Buck, who is a big fan of chicken salad, had to have Shoofly’s special recipe cranberry and pecan chicken salad on wheatberry bread. His sandwich looked amazing and he gave it two thumbs up.
Owner Roseanne surprised us with a plate full of amazing desserts that were impossible to refuse. We all fawned over the variety of strawberry cupcakes, and I especially loved the dense brownies with frosting and raspberries on top. Yum!
