May River flexed its muscle as the area’s top wrestling program with an undefeated run at the Bobcat Duals on Saturday at Bluffton High School, but John Paul II’s growing program had another strong day against tough competition to lead the northern Beaufort County contingent.

The Golden Warriors claimed a 41-39 win over Battery Creek in the first round of pool matches after Chris Orta rallied for a pin after trailing through two periods, and they also defeated Whale Branch, 45-36, to finish 2-2 in pool matches before falling 64-15 to Hilton Head in the fifth-place match.

After going 1-3 in pool matches, Beaufort and Battery Creek squared off in the seventh-place match with the Dolphins winning, 47-36, in a preview of next week’s Region 8-3A duals. Whale Branch defeated Colleton Prep, 54-12, in the ninth-place match.
