History with Holly: Remembering Hurricane Gracie

By Ronald F. Bennett, Sr.
I remember when Hurricane Gracie hit Beaufort in September, 1959. I was 9 years old at that time. Where we lived had very little damage but we were without electricity and water for about a week. But, what I remember the most is that we cooked outside every night and did not have to take baths.

Beaufort Then & Now: This moment in Beaufort’s history is an excerpt from the book “Beaufort … Then and Now,” an anthology of memories compiled by Holly Kearns Lambert. Copies of this book may be purchased at Beaufort Book Store. For information or to contribute your memory, contact Holly at lowcountrymemories@hotmail.com or beaufortmemories@gmail.com.
