History with Holly: Remembering Hurricane Gracie

By Ronald F. Bennett, Sr.
I remember when Hurricane Gracie hit Beaufort in September, 1959. I was 9 years old at that time. Where we lived had very little damage but we were without electricity and water for about a week. But, what I remember the most is that we cooked outside every night and did not have to take baths.

Beaufort Then & Now: This moment in Beaufort’s history is an excerpt from the book “Beaufort … Then and Now,” an anthology of memories compiled by Holly Kearns Lambert.
